If you like to cook in your kitchen, I know you use garlic. And yes, this post is all about fresh, delicious garlic and what to do with it! Who knew?
Whether it be spicy fresh cloves, subdued minced and in a jar, or perfectly savory sprinkled out of a shaker in powdered form, garlic has a place in my heart right up there with salt! <—–this link will take you to my Introduction to Different Kinds of Salts!
There is something wildly enticing and aromatic about that almost overpowering sharpness that is a fresh clove of garlic!
I can regularly be found huffing garlic fumes from a freshly cut clove, and I’m so not ashamed…I might be a little ashamed of the fact that sometimes I can also be found forcing other people to enjoy the smell as much as I do…but, we’re not gonna talk about that, right?
Salt, pepper, and garlic is like my holy trinity of spices.
You just can’t beat the way these three ingredients complement each other!
When using fresh garlic, theres a few different ways to go about it. If you’re not as into the flavor as I am, just use a little! 1 clove can have a profound effect on your entire dish!
If you like having freshly minced garlic on hand without having to chop it up daily, yes, you could buy the jarred, store variety, but in my personal opinion, the flavor does not compare.
But don’t worry, you can still have garlic whenever you need it, without having to get out your cutting board and fiddle with garlic’s annoying papery skin every single time! Just give this mixture a try:
8 CLOVES OF FRESH GARLIC, SLICED OR MINCED
1 TABLESPOON OLIVE OIL
1/4-½ TEASPOONS LEMON JUICE
Combine all 3 ingredients and store in a small jar or ziplock bag in the refrigerator for about 5 days, for whenever you may need it!
As for the powdered kind of garlic, it’s a little different of a flavor, but it is also unique. It really “gets into” the food and ads a great bit of savoriness. I pick fresh garlic first, then powdered second.
I don’t suggest most varieties of granulated, salted, or dehydrated garlic, but that doesn’t mean good ones don’t exist! If you are a fan of any of these, let me know what you use? Would love to try it out!
